Paul Simon Red Rocks Amphitheatre Concert reviews
I thought the performance was excellent overall. Fabulous special effects were present, except for the Phantom's little red bursts from his stick; that could have been more impressive. Carlotta's voice lacked the sharpness which I think gave her more character in other performances. The Phantom was rather over-emotional, I felt, though that could have been this director's/actor's desire to bring more of the insanity forward. Christine's voice often wavered on the sharp side, and was a bit more in the grandiose category that we would normally associate with Carlotta's, rather than the sweet, youthful, pure tone reserved for Christine. The symphonic sound was wonderfully loud.
I have only seen it once, but I keep hoping to see the graveyard version which has Raoul arriving earlier and singing along "once again she is his... once again she returns" while Paul Simon lures his little victim back. The effect of the trio is much stronger than just the duo. I did appreciate the fire columns, though.
As promised, this review has been both too literal and seemingly critical! I did enjoy the show and really enjoyed taking my boyfriend for his first performance. "Go! Go now! Go now and leave me!" I've seen Phantom four times, so my review might be a bit technical.
